Coalition’s goal is to ensure youth in Greater Pittsburgh region have enough healthy food to eat
PITTSBURGH (Sept. 24, 2021) – P3R, the engine behind Pittsburgh’s greatest races – including the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon – is honored to share that it has joined the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank’s new initiative aimed at ending childhood hunger.
The Sports and Media Coalition is a collaborative effort between Pittsburgh’s local media and professional sports organizations, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates Charities, University of Pittsburgh, and P3R. Expected to launch January 1, 2022, the coalition will work to ensure all youth in the region have enough healthy food to eat.
“For more than 10 years, P3R has worked through our free Kids of STEEL program to bring healthy activity and nutrition information to families throughout Western Pennsylvania,” said Troy Schooley, CEO of P3R. “We’re hopeful that our experience can help the coalition achieve its goals and make a huge difference in the lives of children throughout our region.”
Comprising senior-level leadership from more than 20 local media and sports organizations, the coalition will first aim to raise awareness about existing resources to improve children’s food security, collaborate to reduce the stigma associated with children participating in nutrition programs, and promote healthy eating and physical activities.
“The opportunity to bring together our region’s sports and media leaders has been something I’ve desired for a long time,” said Brian Gulish, vice president of marketing and communications at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. “We have great individual relationships with everyone in the coalition, and I’ve always thought there was a way to get them together on the same team given the right mission. Sports and media are two of the main pillars on which our great city and region are founded.”
