Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend Commences with Saturday Events
St. Paul, Minn. – October 2, 2021 – Danny Docherty of St. Paul became the first runner in history to win multiple Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend titles in a single year, capturing victories today in the TC 10K, presented by Dermatology Consultants, and the TC 5K, presented by Fredrikson & Byron, P.A.
The race ushered the return of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend after its pandemic hiatus last year, and the return of the Saturday Events which were also canceled in 2019 due to lightning.
“There was excitement in the air this morning,” Twin Cities In Motion executive director Virginia Brophy Achman said. “Twin Cities and Minnesota runners have waited a long, long time to gather for marathon weekend, and you could feel that at the start line and finish line today.”
Despite the lingering Covid situation, the event is being held with masking requirements at the events indoor locations and in higher-density outdoor areas like the start corrals and finish line walk-off.
Today’s women’s 10K was won by Mankato’s Bobbi Patrick in 38:47 and the women’s 5K went to Shelby Nowak of Minneapolis in 19:00. Find complete results on the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend webpages.
Docherty, who finished third in the 2019 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, won today’s 10K in 31:57 and the 5K in 15:07. On Sunday the Cretin-Derham Hall alum will aim for a third victory in the Medtronic TC 10 Mile, the final leg of the three-race TC Loony Challenge that he and some 400 other runners are attempting this year.
The 10K and 5K races along with the Medtronic TC Family Events, which focuses on events for kids, drew more than 4000 runners of all ages to the State Capitol grounds this morning.
