A record of more than 200 schools and organizations are participating in the 2022 program that motivates kids and their families to get moving together
PITTSBURGH, PA – Thousands of children across Western Pennsylvania have started training for a “marathon” through Kids of STEEL, a free P3R training program that motivates kids and their families to get moving together. This year a record of more than 200 schools and organizations have committed to Kids of STEEL and will complete at least 25 training miles in preparation for the 2022 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events, scheduled for April 29-May 1.
On Saturday, April 30, kids are invited to finish their “marathon” at the Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot (40 meters), Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon (1 mile) or UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K (3.1 miles). With more than 6,600 participants plus their parents in 2019, the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon is one of the largest youth races in the country.
“P3R wants to inspire any and all to move with us, and we are proud that more than 50,000 children have completed Kids of STEEL since we launched the program in 2011,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “The program keeps growing, and we are thrilled to have a record number of Kids of STEEL sites in the region participating this year. We are committed to finding new and exciting ways to keep youth and families moving.”
Kids of STEEL is flexible enough to fit individual school needs and bring a structured fitness program into a variety of environments. Participating schools and organizations also have the opportunity to apply for a $1,000 physical education grant and a transportation grant that provides busing to the Chick-fil-A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon, ensuring all Kids of STEEL have the opportunity to make it to the start line.
More than 40,000 runners are expected to register for the 2022 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Weekend of Events. For more information on Kids of STEEL, go to: p3r.org/programs/kids-of-steel.
