For the second year in a row, Jason Salyer of Tipp For the second year in a row, Jason Salyer of Tipp City is the men’s division winner at the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, which celebrated its 26th running on Sunday, May 5. In the women’s division, 26-year-old Olivia Anger of Bellbrook, OH, won in a time of 2:43:23, the second fastest time recorded for a women’s division winner behind Tatyana Pozdnyakova’s 2:34:35 in 2002.

The 33-year-old Salyer won in a time of 2:26:01, more than a minute faster than his winning time last year of 2:27:10. Much of the race was a back and forth between Salyer and the second-place finisher, 23-year-old Adam Beucler of Hudson, OH, who finished in a time of 2:26:53.

“Adam and I had five or six lead changes,” Salyer said. “I’d never raced Adam before, I’d heard of him and knew he was a talent. Every time I took the lead from him, I never felt that lead was safe, and when he took the lead from me, I told myself I had to stay in contact.”

The 37th Big Sur International Marathon concluded The 37th Big Sur International Marathon concluded with resounding success, as runners embraced the challenge of a new out-and-back course along the coast passing through scenic Point Lobos. Despite the unexpected course alteration due to a highway slip-out in March, participants displayed resilience and determination, creating an unforgettable race day experience. Runners raced through pockets of sunshine and were treated to familiar entertainment including the piano man and the taiko drummers.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the outcome of this year’s Big Sur International Marathon,” said Josh Priester, Executive Director of the Big Sur Marathon Foundation. “Despite the challenges posed by the highway slip-out on March 30th, our runners and volunteers alike showcased their resilience and dedication, making it a memorable event for everyone involved. We have an amazing and supportive community who made this year’s race possible and we are incredibly grateful.”

Marathon weekend featured various distances, including the Marathon, Relay, 21-Miler, 11-Miler, 12K, and 5K, attracting a diverse group of participants from across the country and internationally. The Boston 2 Big Sur challenge, where participants run both the Boston Marathon and the Big Sur Marathon within just 13 days, drew 300 participants.

The top finisher in the Marathon was Simon Ricci, 26, of San Francisco, with a time of 2:29:30. Simon recorded 1st place finishes at both the Napa Valley Half Marathon and Oakland Marathon earlier this year. The first place female was Peyton Bilo, 26, a high school and collegiate standout from Northern California.

Norman, Oklahoma’s Korey Larson was the Memorial Marathon winner with a time of 2:31:56. The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon remembers those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever in the downtown Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. The Finish Line celebrates the lives of the 168 people killed with their names and pictures, inspiration for those last few steps.

“I was really hurting and when you see those, the hurt goes away and they lift you up,” recalled Larson. Catherine “Cat” Lisle, of Edmond, Oklahoma, was crowned the Marathon’s five-time champion after finishing 2:52:03. Catherine also won the Memorial Marathon in 2009, 2010, 2016 and 2017. “It’s a major honor especially to do it in Oklahoma City where the whole reason we’re doing it is to remember the people who cannot do it.”

Vince Ciattei (Under Armour Dark Sky) and Rachel M Vince Ciattei (Under Armour Dark Sky) and Rachel McArthur (Unattached) won the @usatf Road Mile Championships tonight in Des Moines hosted by the Grand Blue Mile. In windy and cool conditions Ciattei clocked 3:56.97 –leading gun to tape– and came close to the world road mile record of 3:56.13 set by Hobbs Kessler last October. McArthur broke away from her rivals in the final quarter to win in 4:32.20. Both athletes won $5000 in prize money.

Ciattei –who finished third in this race last year and was the winner two years ago– left nothing to chance tonight. He moved immediately to the front right after the gun, went through halfway in just under 1:58, and was the race’s only leader. He got a credible challenge from John Reniewicki and Alec Basten in the final quarter, but the two Under Armour Baltimore Distance teammates couldn’t match Ciattei’s speed in the final sprint. They finished second and third in 3:58.48 and 3:59.88, respectively.

“I’m sure in a day I’ll be happy that I won,” said Ciattei in his post-race broadcast interview as he reflected on coming close to the world record. “That hurts, though, man. I’ve been on the wrong side of small margins so often in my career. I thought today might be the day.”
